About us Vigilance

The U.P. Vigilance Establishment has been established under the U.P. Vigilance Establishment Act, 1965, which provides for the constitution, superintendence and administration of the Vigilance Establishment as a special police force.

The Vigilance Establishment performs such functions as per the Government Notification No. Satarkata.Anu-2-1602/39(2)-217-64 Dt. 29-08-1977 which include:

  1.  Keep the Government informed of all the cases of corruption, bribery, misconduct, misbehavior and other malpractice involving public servants that come to its notice ;
  2. Collect intelligence on its own initiative or on the orders of Government in the Vigilance Department relating to corruption of any individual public servant or public servants belonging to a department, class or category;
  3. Make enquiries, secret or open, and investigations in to cases of corruption, bribery, misconduct, misbehavior or other malpractices, that may be referred to it from time by the Government in Vigilance Department ; and
  4. Corrupt Government / Public Servants and Public Servants of similar rank, are trapped while taking gratification other than legal remuneration in respect of an official act etc.

ORGANIZATION STRUCTURE


The Establishment is headed by Director Vigilance who is an officer of the rank of Director General of Police. Besides Director Vigilance, the Establishment at present has sanctioned strength of two Additional Director, one Joint Director, fifteen Superintendents of Police/ Additional Superintendents of Police, besides, there are posts of forty seven Deputy Superintendents of Police and two hundred and fifty Inspectors. In addition, Technical Officers are deputed from various departments, besides the ministerial and other staff. There also are posts of one Additional Director (Prosecution), one Joint Director (Prosecution) and fifteen posts of Prosecution Officers.

At present 14 Sector Offices are functioning under the Vigilance Establishment in various Divisional Headquarters, headed by Superintendents of Police as in-charge. Ten territorial Sector Offices are located at Meerut, Bareilly, Agra, Kanpur, Jhansi, Prayagraj, Ayodhya, Varanasi, Gorakhpur and Lucknow. For important and special enquiries a Central Investigation Sector (CIS) is also functioning from the Headquarters. Apart from these, for enquiries relating to the Irrigation department there is an Irrigation Cell, and for enquiries relating to the Electricity department a Hydel Cell is also functioning at Lucknow, each under the supervision of a Superintendent of Police.
