Pradeshik Armed Constabulary

In 1940 during the Second World War, 13 Coys of U.P. Military Police were raised to deal with internal security and increased to 36 Coy during the war period. Reorganization took place in September 1947 wherein 11 Bns (86 Coys) were raised, XI Bn. PAC was designated training Bn. In 1948 the U.P. Military Police and U.P. State Armed Constabulary were amalgamated into the Provincial Armed Constabulary. PAC was created to prevent frequent deployment of the Army in grave law & order situations which the local police could not handle on its own. Even though it was meant for the State of Uttar Pradesh, the PAC has had the privilege of serving across the length and breadth of the country.

In the 50 years of our existence the PAC has done the nation proud in a variety of situations. From protecting the Indo-Tibetan border to quelling the insurgency in Assam, the PAC has done it all. It has also proven its mettle outside Nepal. Over the years PAC has built up a formidable reputation of effective handlers of communal, sectarian, caste and agrarian disturbances. Often criticized, generally feared and occasionally dreaded, PAC is a highly sought after paramilitary force and is frequently deployed in other States in crisis situations.

Originally conceived for grave law & order situations and anti-dacoity operations, PAC has now been given a wide range of responsibilities. Today, PAC is deeply involved in anti-terrorist operations, security of VIPs, disaster relief in cases of floods, earthquakes, accidents, etc. Change in the nature of its responsibilities has necessasitated a specialized approach and consequently PAC training has been suitably modified and new curricula added.

Presently, it is faced with the challenge of adjusting itself to the social change evident in society. It is educating its members that they must also contribute to the process of nation building. A beginning has been made by emphasizing human rights, adoption of villages for development and environmental related programmes. Besides, blood camps are also organized.

The spirit of sports and adventure forms the cornerstone of PAC morale. To this end, sport's camps and adventure activities are a regular feature. It has started a process of wide interaction with the public in order to imbibe human sensibilities and create social awareness.
